Paxton's First Emergency Room Visit

We have been very blessed to have two pretty healthy kids.  In the three years of being parents, we have only had one visit to the doctor that was not for a well child visit, but for pink eye.  Until last Monday night.  Paxton was playing in our front room and I was in the kitchen making dinner.   The next thing I know Paxton is running into the kitchen screaming with blood pouring out of his mouth!  Now I wasn't too panicked because although we haven't had to go to the doctor for anything, Paxton has had about 3 million head/mouth injuries that always look a lot worse than they are.  But this time I couldn't even see where the blood was coming from.  His teeth were all there, his tongue was fine, and their were no cuts on his lips.  I was able to get him to calm down a bit, and he told me that he jumped off the couch and his toy {a big red stick thing} went down his throat!  Luckily he stopped bleeding pretty fast, and Brandon got home from work soon after.  We could see that there was a ton of bruising and some cuts on the roof of his mouth and the back of his throat.  I called the on call nurse, and she said that we probably better get him in to the ER to get checked out since there are quite a few important structures in your throat.  So off we went.

We were happy to find out that he didn't damage anything too badly, and that he would just need to be on some tylenol and a very soft/liquid diet for a couple days.

Paxton was definitely hurting pretty bad the first few days, and had a hard time sleeping because of it.  He also couldn't eat his favorite things for a while, which didn't help!  We checked on his mouth yesterday {a week and a half after it happened}, and the cuts are all healed but there is definitely still some bruising.   He is doing so much better now, and we are so thankful that he is okay.  Here's to hoping we can go another 3 {or more!} years before we have another visit to the ER!

  1. That is my husbands BIGGEST fear. My kids have to sit to brush their teeth, their straws have to stay in there cups, not tooth picks, chop sticks don't leave the table, and toys are always inspected. :( So sorry poor kid! :(
